A Meter Operator agreement or (MOP contract) is a legal requirement for all half hourly electricity supplied meters. This contract covers the supply of the meter, maintenance and the necessary telecommunications for sending your consumption data to your energy supplier.
A Meter Operator (or MOP) is the company that will fit your meter and then provide on-going meter maintenance. If your site has a supply demand of over 65kw, you will require a half-hourly meter (HH) to be fitted.
If your business has low electricity consumption your supplier will allocate the local meter operator to install non half-hourly (NHH) metering at your site.
You must arrange a contract (known as a Meter Operator Agreement or MOP contract) with your chosen meter operator in order for this work to go ahead. Sites with a maximum demand of over 100kW are required to have metering installed that is capable of measuring consumption in half hourly periods. The meters are read remotely via a telecommunications link. This type of metering is governed by an industry Codes of Practice; Code 3 for sites with a maximum demand exceeding 1MW, and Code 5 for sites with a maximum demand over 100kW.
Meter Operator (MOP) contracts can be charged as a separate element on electricity bills or can be charged annually. As the market is now deregulated, such a competitive market offers a wide range of purchasing options and we can offer advice and expertise in making your purchasing decisions. Whether your main driver is around cost or service, TED is here to keep the costs down and the service levels high.

Analogue electric meters require monthly readings whereas modern digital meters automatically send energy usage data to the utility company. Regardless of which meter is fitted on your premises, both measure electricity usage via kilowatt hours. This is the measurement of watts consumed in a given time. Digital meters are considered to be more accurate in their readings than the analogue counterparts while also recording net electricity usage if your business has wind turbines or solar panels installed. The direction of energy flow is displayed on the meter’s screen.
