Why wind energy is beneficial for business owners

In the UK, wind energy plays a significant role in our energy mix, leading the way for the largest offshore wind capacity in Europe.

The government recently got behind the expansion in the use of offshore wind power, in the hope the renewable energy source will provide a third of the UK’s electricity by 2030.

As the windiest country in Europe, we are an ideal location for generating renewable electricity through wind turbines, both onshore and offshore.

However, for business owners, it raises the question of whether and to what extent wind is a practical form of renewable energy.

As we are increasingly taking advantage of the cleaner energy source, TED look into the benefits that investing in wind energy can have on businesses.

Cost-effective

Wind power is one of the lowest-priced renewable energy sources available. Installing the infrastructure can be fairly costly, however they can help make massive savings on long-term energy bill costs.

Why? This is because they do not use fuel to generate electricity like traditional sources of energy, just the British weather!

Often grouped together, wind turbines work side by side to multiply the amount of energy generated in any one location.

Traditionally, onshore wind farms are cheaper to build and maintain in comparison to offshore wind farms. Despite this, offshore wind farms generate more power, due to the increased wind intensity and consistency at sea.

Clean fuel source

Wind energy doesn’t pollute the air like power plants, as they don’t rely on fossil fuels, such as coal or natural gas to generate electricity.

While building wind turbines involves some emissions, once running they have a very low carbon footprint.

With business sectors using large amounts of energy compared to the average household, the more businesses using wind energy as a power source can be very beneficial to the environment.

Sustainable

Companies are always looking for new ways to be more sustainable, and wind power provides the perfect solution.

Wind speeds are becoming increasingly forecastable and are averaged out across the country. With turbines operating automatically, they can also last between 30 and 50 years and require no maintenance, meaning the potential of wind power in the future is massive.

As long as the sun shines and the wind blows, wind energy can be produced and harnessed.
